Volunteer Opportunities
We are excited for your involvement with Locke High School as a Green Dot Public School, and hope that you are excited about the coming year as well! We wanted to share all of the possible ways to meet the 35 hour service requirement. We require 35 hours from each family per year because we strongly believe that we cannot be successful as an institution and our students cannot be successful without the support and efforts of our parents and guardians. Having said that, we as a staff realize that many of you work long hours and do not often have the time to come to school to help during the day. As a result, we have devised a list of ways you can earn your hours. Please review the list of opportunities below and select those that make the most sense for you. Remember, if you do not complete your hours this year, they will carry over to next year. You could jeopardize your child’s status at Locke High School if you do not complete your hours.

Service hour opportunities:

School involvement after school hours:
  • Attend PTA meetings: receive two service hours per meeting. Meetings are on the first Friday of every month. From 5:00pm-6:30pm (starting November)
  • Bring another parent: Get a third service hour if you bring another parent who has never been to a PTA meeting before.
  • Chaperone during dances and field trips: Supervise Field Trips, dances and extracurricular activities.
  • Participate on school committees: TBD.
  • Help students with homework after school or volunteer with student clubs

School involvement during the school day:
  • Help distribute lunches: any weekday from 11:30 pm to 1:30 pm (Wednesdays from 12:50-1:22)
  • Help in the office: Stop by the office any day on school hours and we will find some work for you to do. Please call and schedule time before.

Easiest hours possible—encourage your students!
  • Perfect attendance for a quarter: Any student who has perfect attendance for any given quarter (9 week period) will receive 5 service hours for his or her parent. We lose $32,000 for every percentage point we go down in attendance, so good attendance is very important!
  • 3.0 GPA Student: Any student who has a 3.0 GPA or higher will earn 5 service hours for his or her parent.
  • 2 or fewer detentions in a quarter: Any student who has 2 or fewer detentions in a quarter will earn 2 service hours for his or her parent.

From home on weeknights or during weekends (Up to 10 hours):
  • Study with your child: Work one-on-one with your child on homework, studying for a quiz, or on any other academic activity and receive an hour if you fill out the attached form for Off-Campus Service Hours.
  • Take an academic field trip: Take your child to visit a college, a museum, or any other educational institution and receive an hour if you fill out the attached form for Off-Campus Service Hours.
(Your child can pick up extra forms in the office and should return them to the office once complete.)

Opportunities for your child to earn hours for you (Up to 10 hours):
• Mentor events: Seniors receive service hours for mentor events that occur outside the school day. Parents attend hours for attending parent mentoring events.
• Teacher or office help: Helping a teacher or in the office after school or before school.
• Join Principal Advisory Committee/Clubs: I will have a Principal’s Advisory Committee composed of students from each grade level to give input. It will meet one day a month before school and students on the committee earn a service hour each meeting.

Help contribute necessary supplies:
  • Bring in bottled water, Office supplies, etc.: get current list of needed supplies from school office. $5 of supplies will count for 1 hour.

Other
  • If you are worried about meeting your hours requirement even after reading about these opportunities, please schedule an appointment with Salvador Castillo (Parent Coordinator of LLCA1)early so we can collaboratively figure out rewarding ways for you to make your hours!

Be sure to sign in at the counselor’s office each time you come to school to earn service hours. Remember, we need your help to ensure your child’s success!
